The authentic tastes of Indian street food are most renowned in Mumbai. Why is it hailed as the street food capital of India? The sheer variety might have something to do with it, plus it is loved by people from every background. Here are the most popular street foods that you’ll find in Mumbai.

  1. Pani Puri

All across India, everyone loves this crispy street snack. It’s crispy fried puri filled to the brim with chickpeas, potatoes, tamarind chutney and spices. For such a small snack – you can easily eat it in one bite – the dance of flavors across your tongue is incredible.

  1. Vada Pav

It’s been called the “poor man’s burger” but there’s nothing poor about it. Pav is what they call a bread roll in India. Vada is the mouthwatering stuff in between – a fritter of mashed potatoes. It’s not as simple as it sounds. It’s adorned with sweet chutney, garlic chutney and fried chilies, all of which catapult this into Mumbai’s top must-try street foods.

  1. Kebab

No Mumbai street food list could ever be complete with mentioning the kebab. Typically a skewer of marinated meat and fish grilled to perfection, there are plenty of street food stalls that provide vegetarian offerings, making this a snack that pleases everyone.

  1. Frankie

Mumbai is without a doubt the undisputed place of origin for the Frankie. It comes in a variety of ways but typically will consist of flour wraps filled with mutton or chicken along with eggs and mashed potatoes. Whatever is chosen for the main ingredients is often dressed with raw onions and spicy sauces.

  1. Dosa

This one is a thin pancake made of fermented rice batter, and while it sounds rather simple, it is offered in a variety of options and styles, along with a variety of chutneys. The dosa is incredibly delicious!

  1. Falooda

This dessert is India’s answer to the ice cream sundae. It’s made of flavored milk, pearls of tapioca, vermicelli and bits of gelatin. The original way it was made was with rose milk and rose syrup but now you can find it in pretty much any variety you dream up!
